Winery success at the “Oscars” of sparkling wines
On October 30th, our cava 1917 Magnum brut nature gran reserva 2020 was chosen as World’s Best Cava and Best Spanish Sparkling Wine at the twelfth Best in Class Awards ceremony of The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) 2025, the world’s most important and prestigious competition for champagnes and sparkling wines.
The event, held as every year at London’s historic Merchant Taylor’s Hall, featured an exceptional jury: the British Tom Stevenson, a world leader in wine journalism and sparkling wine expert; the Finnish Master of Wine Essi Avellan, co-founder and editor-in-chief of FINE Champagne, the only magazine in the world dedicated exclusively to Champagne; and the Hungarian George Markus, a renowned specialist in sparkling wines and champagnes, and one of the world’s best tasters.

It is worth noting that the 2019 vintage of 1917 already achieved the distinction of Best Cava Brut Nature at CSWWC 2024, reaffirming its path of excellence in recent years.

A long and laborious production process to achieve Spain’s best sparkling wine
The 1917 brut nature gran reserva 2020 is a cava made from a blend of xarel·lo (50%), macabeo (30%), and pinot noir (20%), using organic grapes from our estates in la Teuleria dels Àlbers (la Granada, Alt Penedès) and the pre-coastal mountain range (Font-rubí, Alt Penedès). After four months of aging in stainless steel tanks, the base wine begins a long aging process in the bottle for 56 months, during which it acquires its elegance and depth. In the glass, it presents fine and creamy bubbles, perfectly integrated, accompanying great aromatic complexity with hints of ripe fruit, brioche, and mineral notes. On the palate, it is fresh and persistent, with a saline and mineral finish that reveals the unique character of the calcareous soils of Penedès.
This classic style, the result of a careful selection of organic grapes and prolonged aging, was key to the CSWWC 2025 jury’s decision to distinguish it above other cavas and sparkling wines across the country.
Among the best sparkling wines in the world
With this new recognition, 1917 Magnum continues to expand an award record that has established it as a benchmark among great international sparkling wines. The name 1917 pays tribute to our origins, when the Massana family began its journey in the world of sparkling wines more than a century ago.
