A unique history

Winegrowers since 1390

The Massana family is one of the oldest documented winemaking lineages in the Penedès region. The first written reference to the family dates back to 1390, when Ramon Maçana, a farmer from Sant Pere Molanta, was mentioned. A few centuries later, we find the first reference to the family’s relationship with Maset del Lleó, the manor house built in 1777. At that time, the lands of Maset del Lleó were still under the feudal authority of the Abbey of Montserrat, and taxes had to be paid to work them. Since then, 20 generations of our family have been linked to vineyard cultivation and the production of high-quality wines and cavas.

The family’s perseverance in vineyard cultivation did not falter even during the terrible phylloxera plague of the late 19th century. Thus, in 1917, Josep Massana i Carbó found the courage to start over and craft the winery’s first sparkling wine, a special blend of indigenous varieties that we still use today in our cavas.

In the 1950s, Ton Massana i Ràfols, son of Josep Massana i Carbó and Dolors Ràfols Puig, took advantage of an uncle’s taxi to bring wines and agricultural products from the Penedès to Barcelona. Seeing that the business was working, in 1958, Ton decided to buy a truck and sell the products once a week directly to customers’ homes.

At the end of the 80s, the democratization of telephony allowed us to enter our customers’ homes and offer a better sales and after-sales service. This is a hallmark of our identity that we have kept unchanged to this day.

In the early 90s, Josep Massana i Noya, the current president of the winery, traveled across the peninsula with the hope of making an old dream come true: being closer to our customers. With this goal, he opened commercial branches in the main provincial capitals of Spain, reaching the current 35.

In 2001, we exported our business model to Cologne (Germany), opening the first branch outside Spain, and in 2015, we inaugurated a new branch in Andorra. Furthermore, since 2000, we have been exporting wines and cavas to more than 25 countries, including Belgium, Brazil, China, South Korea, the United States, Finland, and Japan.

Today, we serve more than 180,000 customers worldwide and produce more than 5 million bottles of wine and cava a year, a figure that has led us to become the leading winery in home delivery sales without intermediaries.
