How do we classify our wines and cavas?

A world of sensations within easier reach

With the aim of making the world of wine more accessible, at Maset we have developed our own classification system that makes it possible to understand, in a quick and intuitive way, the sensory profile of each of our wines and cavas. To create it, we drew inspiration from the work of renowned wine critics and communicators such as Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson and Madeline Puckette, and adapted it to our own way of understanding the product and guiding the consumer.

This system is based on five main characteristics that define the sensations a wine conveys on the palate: body, sweetness, tannins, acidity and alcohol. Each of these dimensions helps us describe the character of a wine beyond technical data, focusing on what the person tasting it actually perceives.

The 5 characteristics of a wine

Body refers to the wine’s intensity, both in terms of colour and the density and weight it shows on the palate. Sweetness describes the sweet sensation we perceive, while tannins express the degree of astringency and roughness, especially present in many red wines. Acidity is responsible for the wine’s freshness and liveliness, and alcohol is reflected in the warming sensation it leaves on the palate.

All the winery’s products are carefully analysed according to these five characteristics and scored on a scale from 1 to 5. This assessment allows us to create a sensory snapshot of each wine or cava and, from there, classify it within a specific product type. In this way, each product is defined not only by how it is made or where it comes from, but also by the sensations it offers.

Using this methodology, at Maset we work with four major product categories, designed to help identify in a simple way which style of wine best suits each person’s tastes.

Maset’s 4 main product categories

The Light category includes young, fresh and agile wines, ideal for those looking for easy-drinking wines with liveliness and low tannic load. The Fruity category brings together young wines with medium body, expressive and pleasant, where fruit notes and a smooth palate profile predominate. The Mature category corresponds to crianza and reserve wines with medium body and greater complexity, wines with more depth, nuance and structure. Finally, the Intense category includes powerful wines with more body and character, designed for those who enjoy bolder and longer-lasting profiles.

Thanks to this classification system, consumers can quickly understand the intensity and overall profile of any wine or cava from the winery at a glance. This makes the choice much easier, both for those who are just beginning to explore the world of wine and for those who are already familiar with it and are looking for a more practical way to find the product that best matches their tastes, the occasion or the type of meal.

Ultimately, this way of classifying our wines and cavas responds to a very clear idea: bringing wine closer to everyone by making it easier to understand, more accessible and simpler to enjoy. Because choosing a wine should not be complicated, but rather a natural, intuitive and sensation-filled experience.
